Maternal and Child Health

The Sarpy/Cass Health Department offers a variety of Maternal Child Health (MCH) Services to our community. Our goals are to promote healthy families, empower parents through education and support, improve breastfeeding success, and develop community connections.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION
The Sarpy/Cass Health Department MCH program has a Breastfeeding Resource Lending Library available for public and professional use.  Our library has children’s picture books about breastfeeding, books about general breastfeeding topics, and books about special circumstances like exclusive pumping and following a MSPI diet. Our DVD’s are for professional use only, but all books are available to the public to check out on a short-term basis. Please call the Department at 402-339-4334 to schedule an appointment to take a look.

The Sarpy/Cass Health Department MCH program offers a free Community Breastfeeding Advocate (CBA) training to any group interested in learning more about how to support breastfeeding in the community.  Our targeted groups are businesses, childcare settings, Head Start programs, and schools.  We are happy to train and support other sectors, too, like churches. You can register for the training by filling out the Google Form here.

WIC BREASTFEEDING PEER COUNSELOR PROGRAM
The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program uses an evidenced-based peer-to-peer model that connects pregnant and postpartum women with paraprofessional breastfeeding counselors who come from the same neighborhood and speak the same language as WIC participants.  Sarpy/Cass Health Department WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors provide basic breastfeeding information, positive reinforcement, and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.  Our Peer Counselors can be found in several of the Douglas-Sarpy County WIC offices.  To learn more about the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program, contact Sarah at [email protected]
